Forming questions with present continuous tense

To form questions in the present continuous tense, follow these steps:

  1. Start with the correct form of the verb "to be" (am, is, are) based on the subject.
  2. Add the subject immediately after the helping verb.
  3. Follow with the main verb in its -ing form.
  4. End with the rest of the sentence if there is additional information.

Structure

Helping verb (am/is/are) + Subject + Main verb (-ing) + Rest of the sentence

Examples

Notice the change in the position of the subject and helping verb (is, am, are).

  1. He is playing the piano. -> Is he playing the piano?

  2. They are going to the park. -> Are they going to the park?

  3. It is raining outside. -> Is it raining outside?

Negative form questions

To form negative questions in the present continuous tense, we can add "not" after the helping verb or subject of the sentence. It is common to us contracted form (isn't, aren't) if we put "not" after the helping verb.

It is common to use "aren't" as contracted form of "am not" instead of "amn’t", which is considered nonstandard nowadays.
  1. Is he playing the piano? -> Is he not playing the piano?, Isn't he playing the piano?

  2. Are they going to the park? -> Are they not going to the park?, Aren't they going to the park?

  3. Is it raining outside? -> Is it not raining outside?, Isn't it raining outside?

  4. Am I driving slowly? -> Am I not driving slowly?, Aren't I driving slowly?
