Form negative past continuous tense sentences

Forming negative past continuous tense sentences

After a few lessons on forming negative sentences and questions, we should be getting the hang of it. We will continue to learn to form negative sentences and questions for every tense so that it becomes a second nature to us. 😎

To form a negative sentence in the past continuous tense, we add "not" after the helping verb (was/were), followed by the main verb with -ing. This structure is used to show that an action was not happening at a specific moment in the past.

Examples

helping verb not main verb

  1. I was studying when you called. -> I was not studying when you called.
  2. There were listening to the teacher. -> They were not listening to the teacher.
  3. She was reading at that time. -> She was not reading at that time.
  4. We were expecting guests yesterday. -> We were not expecting any guests yesterday.

Contractions

We can also use contractions wasn't/weren't to form negative sentences as well. Doing so makes the sentences sound less formal and is very common in spoken English. For example:
- I was not studying when you called. -> I wasn't studying when you called.
- They were not listening to the teacher. -> They weren't listening to the teacher.
