Form past continuous tense questions

If we remember how to form present continuous tense questions, it will be very easy to form past continuous tense questions. To form past continuous tense questions, we just need to change from is/am/are to was/were.

Structure

Helping verb (was/were) + Subject + Main verb (-ing) + Rest of the sentence

Examples

  1. I was watching TV when you called. -> Was I watching TV when you called?
  2. We were traveling to the beach last weekend. -> Were we traveling to the beach last weekend?
  3. The kids were making a mess in the living room. -> Were the kids making a mess in the living room?

Negative form questions

Same as any other tenses, we can form negative form questions by putting "not" after the helping verb (was/were) or the subject of the sentence. Contracted form (wasn't/weren't) is also common in spoken English. For example:

  1. Was I watching TV when you called? -> Wasn't I watching TV when you called?, Was I not watching TV when you called?
  2. Were we traveling to the beach last weekend? -> Weren't we traveling to the beach last weekend?, Were we not traveling to the beach last weekend?
  3. Were the kids making a mess in the living room? -> Weren't the kids making a mess in the living room?, Were the kids not making a mess in the living room?
