Form past perfect continuous tense questions

To form past perfect continuous tense questions, we start by the helping verb "Had", followed by the subject, the word "been", the main verb with -ing, then the rest of the sentences.

Structure
Had + Subject + Been + Verb (-ing) + the rest of the sentence + ?

Examples

Notice how the subject and the helping verb "had" switch places from assertive sentences to questions.

  1. She had been reading that book for hours before dinner. -> Had she been reading that book for hours before dinner?
  2. They had been practicing for the competition before the coach arrived. -> Had they been practicing for the competition before the coach arrived?
  3. He had been living in the city for a long time before he moved to the countryside. -> Had he been living in the city for a long time before he moved to the countryside?
  4. We had been waiting in line for tickets when the event was canceled. -> Had we been waiting in line for tickets when the event was canceled?
  5. You had been working on the report before the deadline was extended. -> Had you been working on the report before the deadline was extended?
Remember that we can ask negative questions by adding "not" after either "had" or the subject of the sentence. For example:
- Hadn't you been working on the report before the deadline was extended?
- Had you not been working on the report before the deadline was extended?
