Form negative past perfect tense sentences

Negative sentences in the past perfect tense express that an action or state had not been completed before another action or point in the past. To form negative past perfect tense sentences is very easy. All you have to do is put "not" after helping verb "had" (or with contraction "hadn't").

Structure
Subject + had (helping verb v2) + not + past participle of the main verb (V3)

Examples

  1. Regular Verb:

    Affirmative: They had completed their homework before dinner.

    Negative: They had not completed their homework before dinner.

  2. Irregular Verb:

    Affirmative: She had taken the exam before the deadline.

    Negative: She had not taken the exam before the deadline.

  3. Verb to Have:

    Affirmative: He had had enough time to prepare for the test.

    Negative: He had not had enough time to prepare for the test.

  4. Verb to Be:

    Affirmative: The weather had been perfect for the picnic.

    Negative: The weather had not been perfect for the picnic.
