Form negative simple past sentences

Forming negative simple past sentences

In this lesson, we will cover how to form negative sentences in the simple past tense. Negative sentences indicate that something did not happen in the past. We will look at the sentence structure for both singular and plural subjects and how to form negative sentences using different types of verbs: verb to do, verb to have, and verb to be.

Basic Sentence Structure

The structure of a negative simple past sentence is:

Structure:
Subject + did not (or didn't) + base form of the verb

Examples:

Notice how the main verb changes in each example.

  • Singular: She went to the party. -> She did not go to the party.
  • Plural: They ate dinner last night. -> They did not eat dinner last night.

Verb to do as main verb

  • Singular: He did his homework. -> He did not do his homework.
  • Plural: They did the laundry. -> They did not do the laundry.

Verb to have as main verb

For verb to have, notice how the main verbs in the negative sentences are both "have", even though the subject in the first example is singular (she). This is because the base form of verb to have is "have"

  • Singular: She had a car. -> She did not have a car.
  • Plural: They had enough time. -> They did not have enough time.

Negative Sentences with "Verb to Be"

The verb "to be" is different from other verbs in the past tense. Instead of using "did not," we simply add "not" after the correct form of was or were.

Structure:
Subject + was/were (wasn't/weren't) + not + the rest of the sentence

Examples:

  • Singular: He was at the meeting. -> He was not at the meeting.
  • Plural: They were happy with the results. -> They were not happy with the results.
