In this lesson, we will cover how to form negative sentences in the simple past tense. Negative sentences indicate that something did not happen in the past. We will look at the sentence structure for both singular and plural subjects and how to form negative sentences using different types of verbs: verb to do, verb to have, and verb to be.
The structure of a negative simple past sentence is:

Notice how the main verb changes in each example.
For verb to have, notice how the main verbs in the negative sentences are both "have", even though the subject in the first example is singular (she). This is because the base form of verb to have is "have"
The verb "to be" is different from other verbs in the past tense. Instead of using "did not," we simply add "not" after the correct form of was or were.
