Forming Simple Past Tense Questions

Forming simple past tense questions

In simple past tense, forming questions generally requires inverting the subject and the helping verb. With regular verbs, use "did" as the helping verb. For questions with "to be" as the main verb, simply invert the subject and "was/were."

Regular verbs, "to do," and "to have"

Structure:
Did + Subject + Base Form of the Verb

Examples

Notice how the main verb changes in each example.

She watched the movie. -> Did she watch the movie?

He did his homework. -> Did he do his homework?

They had dinner early. -> Did they have dinner early?

Verb "to be" as the main verb

Structure:
Was/Were + Subject

Example with Singular Subject (was):

She was at the concert. -> Was she at the concert?

Example with Plural Subject (were):
